Stitch How-To: Guide to Tassels

Hello, my artsy friend! Today we're exploring the tassel technique. This “stitch” allows you to add fluffy charm to your florals or even hair to embroidered portraits — it’s versatile and so. much. fun!

Why Tassel Stitch?

I fell in love with this stitch when I learned it, and I think you will too. There's something magical about how it adds dimension to your work - whether you're creating thistle tops, fluffy flower centers, or decorative borders. The first time I used it in a floral piece, I couldn't stop running my fingers over the soft, tactile elements. It truly makes your embroidery come alive.

Let's Break It Down!

First, gather your materials - you'll want to use all six strands of your embroidery floss for the fullest, fluffiest effect. I learned this through trial and error, trust me on this one!

Start by anchoring a safety pin just above where you want your tassel. This is my favorite trick for getting consistently sized loops. Then bring your needle up at the starting point, loop the thread over the safety pin, and take it back down at the same spot. Keep making these loops side by side until you've covered the width you want.

Now here's the crucial part - use a contrasting thread (I usually go with green for stems) to make small, secure stitches across the base of your loops. This is what will hold everything in place, so make sure these stitches are nice and snug.

Finally - and this is the fun part - carefully cut along the loops at the top of the safety pin, remove it, and watch your tassel spring to life!

Tips: Let’s make some lemonade out of those lemons from my previous stitching failures! Here are a few tips that will help you as you start to practice:

  • Choose your thread carefully - you want something that's soft and pliable. Stiff thread just won't give you that fluffy effect we're after.

  • Make those anchoring stitches count! They're what keep your tassel firmly in place, so don't be shy about making them secure.

  • And when it comes to trimming, think of it like giving your tassel a little haircut. Take your time, and don't be afraid to go back and even things out if needed.
